Glad I could help. 30% off on the S90 is a pretty amazing deal, for a advanced compact I think it is a no-brainer purchase at that price point. I'm pretty happy myself with the camera, it takes really decent pictures right out of the box and it's especially good if you like taking pictures in low light. After that, just a little bit of tweaking in a processing program (even Picassa is fine) and you can really make the images pop.

Vancouver is an awesome city, you'll have no trouble finding cool things to take pictures of.

Thanks for the advice buddy it really helped. I just picked up the S90 for a great price. I live in Vancouver so no Black Friday sales, but this camera dealer was having a one time 30% off all cameras sale. I can't wait to start taking pictures.

Again, thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. Cheers and happy holidays (Too early? haha)

Hi Terrence,

Thanks for the compliment, I'm honestly an amateur too. So you're not far behind if you start taking pics.

What kind of camera do you have? If it is a Canon, you actually might be in luck. Another poster on my Youtube review told me about CHDK, basically it's a program that some people made that lets you do advanced manual controls on a regular Canon point and shoot. All you need to do is find the version for your camera and upload it to your memory card, when you use that same memory card you are able to use advanced controls like changing shutter speed, etc. The best thing is that it's free so if you already have a Canon point and shoot you can give it a try and start using that to take pics. Who knows, maybe you can save the $$$ you were planning to spend until you are ready for a bigger purchase.

Here's the website: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

Besides that I think that an advanced point and shoot like the Canon S90, Canon G10/11 or the Panasonic LX3 are probably great investments for you. My previous compact was what got me into photography that was the Casio z850 - if you check on ebay someone might be selling it cheap and it might be worth considering. Check out these pages to see photography that I did exclusively with that camera:

http://fakeconomy.com/2009/10/rip-casio-z850/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/72484936@N00/sets/72157620862877515/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/72484936@N00/sets/72157621002299030/

As for other sites to check for more camera reviews here are a few that I usually go to:

http://kenrockwell.com/

http://www.dpreview.com/

http://www.cameralabs.com/

I also recommend searching flickr by camera, that way you can see the pictures other people have made with the camera you might be interested in.

http://www.flickr.com/cameras/

Finally, check out youtube and amazon.com for reviews. Between all of these sources I'm sure you'll find a ton of options for you.

So I stumbled upon your site last month after I saw your youtube review of the Canon S90, which was very enlightening. Your blog has really inspired me to start taking photos. I've been using a pretty generic low end camera and wanted to upgrade to something like the S90, but I'd like to find out a little more. Can you recommend any reliable sites that I could do some research on? I'm looking to just do some amateur photography and you seem very knowledgeable on the subject. I've got a budget of about $300-400 so it's been rough looking for a decent camera. Cheers buddy.
