Day 5 – 5/31
By now I had seen just about everything in San Francisco city proper, it was time to expand the boundaries a bit and head out of town. I still had to do my touristy thing and visit the Golden gate bridge (something I had avoided before because of the persistent fog) and I also wanted to check out Sausalito. I found out that there was a bus that took you to both the bridge and Sausalito. My original plan was to stop before crossing the bridge, get off and walk to the other side and take another bus to Sausalito. Unfortunately the bus driver kept going all the way to Marin City, despite me pressing the next stop button. So I ended up cabbing it back to Sausalito for $25 – I was pissed.
Sausalito is a sunny resort town by the sea that reminded me of Newport, RI. It seemed to be a summer escape for well-healed rich people with a passion for sailing and polo shirts. Sauselito offers some pretty great views of San Francisco, and the area itself is pretty charming in a Newport/Cape Cod kind of way. Expensive cars were driving up and down the street and there were alternating art galleries, cafe’s and restaurants. I ended up eating at a place called Poggio’s, a slightly upscale Italian restaurant. I had a lamb-pasta appetizer and the roast chicken with spoon bread. Out of everything I ate at the restaurant the spoon bread was the best part, I made a note that I need to try and make it myself when i get back to Boston.
After spending the day in Sausalito I went back to the Golden Gate bridge and got off the bus so I could walk along the span to the other side. It was an overcast and windy day, honestly I didn’t really think it was that worth doing but it was one of those touristy pictures that you need to take while visiting.
After getting back to the city I went to the Russian Hill neighborhood and stopped in a small wine bar called Amelie. I only stuck around for a couple of glasses, I had to check out of my hostel and head in for an early night. The next day I would rent a car and tour Napa Valley – something I had been eager to do all week long.
